These exquisite rare fossils preserve the earliest land colonisers in the fossil record. Rhynie Chert is considered a lagerstatten (meaning a site of exceptional preservation) and preserves plants, algae, arthropods, fungi, cyanobacteria and lichens. The chert was formed when silica rich waters were ejected into the hot springs and geysers of what is now Rhynie, Scotland. This mineralised and preserved the lifeforms in the vicinity. We have cut and polished the chert that formed as a result of this into squares exhibiting the astounding organic structures they preserve.
