Tom Kapitany | Geologists Travels | Across the border to Mexico
My carry on suitcase was packed and on the road again to warmer climates. This has been an odd show, with cold weather, slow sales and I that have not been feeling very well, so it was difficult for me to get around the 50 or so shows in Tucson. Lots of faces of friends met over the last 30 years and a few new ones from Facebook. I’m off to Mexico knowing full well that the invasion of criminals and drug dealers across the “Wall” to the USA will make Mexico slightly safer. We still have the bullet hole in our...
Tom Kapitany | Geologists Travels | Tucson Mineral Show
11 February 2019 The Westward Look Mineral Show opened Friday. I managed to get there by walking about two miles, I needed the exercise..! The first room I visited was Crystal Classics with Diana and Ian Bruce. They had one of the better displays. Photos were taken in various rooms. Collectors Edge is always amazing as well. Kristalle had a nice display though did not allow any photos. Generally most dealers allowed one or two photos. There were some well priced minerals and some with extra zeros that must have been mistakenly added. But generally an amazing display of outstanding world class minerals...
Tom Kapitany - Geologists Travels - Rosie the Shark
18 February 2019 Never a dull moment. While I was in Tucson there were major earth works as well as redevelopment happening in Canberra at the National Dinosaur Museum, while at Crystal World we began the process of saving Rosie, the White Pointer shark, from being destroyed. Both had major logistical issues... Stanley, our T-Rex, weighs over 5,000kgs and needs a crane to hoist her into new foundations (she has been trying to escape lately now that the kids have gone back to school, I think she is getting hungry). And Rosie needs a new home. With her tank weighing at...
Tom Kapitany - Geologists Travels - Arizona, U.S.A
19 January 2019 Hank Ebes and I began our journey to the Tucson Gem & Mineral show (https://www.mineralshowslld.com) taking the scenic route through the San Carlos Indian Reservation, Apache country. Giant cacti (saguaro) and magnificent landscapes. We arrived very early to have some rest before the show. With our airfreight arriving surprisingly fast, we had to pick it up before the airline began charging storage fees. Many of the big tents had been set up for the show, with many more smaller tents still to come. Hank and I caught up with Bill Barker, who maintains a permanent shop there. With crew...
